Prosecution

Prosecution is a last resort and only occurs when all other options have failed to have a positive effect on an individual, group or organisation.

Although the RSPCA does prosecute, this is conducted by the national RSPCA. The Stockport, East Cheshire and West Derbyshire Branch of the RSPCA does not get actively involved with prosecutions although we will escalate an incident up to the national level if we feel that prosecution is the only option.

Wherever possible all branches of the RSPCA offer advice and assistance to improve animal welfare, including giving people time to make improvements to their standards of care.
Unfortunately, this is not always possible or appropriate, for example if there has been a deliberate act of violence against an animal, where people won't accept assistance, or in extreme cases of neglect.

It is under these types of circumstances that the RSPCA would consider prosecution under laws such as the Animal Welfare Act 2006. For more information, please visit the national RSPCA website
