Ensuring that those who abuse animals are dealt with appropriately
Our branch, like all local RSPCA branches, operates as an all volunteer, autonomous, self-funding foundation, based on the rules, regulations and guidelines of the national society.
We support the work of the RSPCA Inspectorate, which is managed by the national society, through liaison with inspectors, animal collection officers and the staff at the society's regional headquarters in Leeds. This involves taking in and caring for animals rescued by inspectors or which are removed by voluntary arrangement with owners who are unable to guarantee an acceptable level of care or quality of life.
We fund the temporary placement of these and other animals in a fianancially limited number of places in private boarding kennels, catteries or temporary foster homes whilst their rehoming is sought from within the community.
We also accept dogs and cats from members of the public who for various reasons are either unable or unwilling to care for their animals. Sadly, there is always a long list of animals waiting to come into our care as boarding space is very limited.
Prior to rehoming we provide 'home visitors' to check on compatibility of animal and potential adopter in our branch area for our animals and those from any other RSPCA branch.
We fund and oversee veterinary treatment for animals in our care including neutering, vaccinating, worming and microchipping.
We operate welfare schemes to help people who are on low incomes/means tested benefits with the costs of neutering and treatment for their pets.
